WLFA associates completed Tohono Plaza early in 2009, after a two year process starting with initial concepts and review of old documents. In early 2007, the Economic Development Authority (EDA, formed in 2001,
www.economicdevelopment-ton.org) of the Tohono O’odham Nation (www.tonation-nsn.gov) put the project out for bid.

The EDA obtained a 25 year lease on a 26,000 sq. ft. retail facility, and desired to double its size while making a positive statement to the O’odham Nation. Our company was selected on the basis of our tradition of re-adaptive knowledge of regional mercantile architecture and our ability to deliver a project with many facets of restoration, expansion and culture. The EDA accepted our proposal to renovate the existing utilitarian type steel framed structures already present on site and to add three more steel framed buildings. Eight hundred feet of canopy adorned with native symbols and steel work tied the buildings together harmoniously. As a project of the Tohono O’odham Nation, cultural expression was in the forefront of the design program. Art was the medium chosen and continues to shape tribal architecture.
